Allergies

I do not like winter time, I love warm climate. The one thing I am looking forward to after the summer (when and if we have any) though, is cooler weather. I won't hear my husband sneezing and sniffling all the time, because of his allergies.

If both of our parents had allergies, we will have a 66% chance to develop one, too.

We are not born with allergies; they can develop at any time, even during adulthood. Just as they appear, a child's allergy symptoms may decrease or go away entirely.

Conventional methods of relief are over-the-counter anti-histamines or allergy shots. Yet, the Japanese have found that their green tea may render some relief. And the only herbal extract that has undergone successful clinical trials is the "Butterbur" which is a perennial shrub that grows in North America, Asia and Europe.

But like with everything else we ingest that we usually don't, it is always best to ask your doctor first.

Animal Instincts, part 2

I had lots of fun researching animal instincts. Let's get into part 2.

Take it from the swans. They stay loyal to each other for life! Which means, for us humans, that a healthy relationship translates into living a longer life and lowering the risk of depression at the same time.

Dolphins on the other hand are very cliquie. Did you know that a study was done to prove that, like dolphins, happy people joined the group of happy people, whereas unhappy people clustered with like-minded people?

And then there are baboons: their alpha males, the ones that mate the most and lead the packs, are much more stressed than beta males, who don't have as many demands on them and still are able to mate, well, may be not as often.

Last but not least: honeybees: they teach us teamwork and prepare food that we can also eat! They are collecting nectar, transport it to the hive, and process the honey for us to consume.

What do your animal instincts tell you?

Animal Instincts, part 1

If you see yourself as a shark, you are a go-getter. A shark gets what it wants. Sharks focus on what they want, then they attack, and they get it done.

If you are a social butterfly and treasure friendship, have a look at elephants: They are like old friends. They might not have seen each other for a long time, but they renew their bonds immediately after meeting again.

When we are looking at dogs, we see them as a man's best friend. They know how to forgive and forget; they are loyal, and they enjoy their life (usually).

Did you know that birds are considered to be the most stress-free animals. And do you know why? Because they groom each other. For us humans, that could be a massage. So give your partner the backrub he or she's been waiting for, or just book a massage.

There is a lot of talk about taking naps. The animal that knows how to do that expertly is the cat. Naps of up to 30 minutes restore our alertness and improve our mood. So go and curl up. That's what I am going to do.

Humour

Humour helps us unwind, laugh and be jolly, even if just for a few moments.

The other day I read about funny pick-up lines. So listen, you bachelors/bachelorettes out there. You might learn a thing or two:

A young lady went on a vacation. A good-looking lad walked up to her and said: "a 9". Yeah, definitely a 9. You'd be a 10, but you are missing one thing … me!" After 25 years, that young lady is still talking about this short conversation.

The next one goes like this:" You must be tired, because you've been running through my mind all night!"

And the last one. I am sure Audra, our soon-to-be RMT would fall for this one:" Your eyes are as blue as the ocean. I think I can see dolphins swimming in them."

Raw Eggs

I was reading an article about raw eggs. Raw eggs don't seem to be appetizing at all, but the yolks contain many nutrients that are beneficial for your health. And if you eat them raw, not cooked or fried, you'll be reaping their full benefits.

Egg yolks contain Vitamins A, D, E, and K; and the good cholesterol for neurotransmitter and hormone production. Also Omega 3 and lecithin, for your skin, liver and brain.

How do you prepare them?

Either mixing with a smoothie or with milk and honey; or stir in the yolk with raw honey and organic peanut butter, and my husband loves them in an egg nog.

Now, egg whites on the other hand, may cause digestive problems.

A little advice, ensure that the eggs you are purchasing are fresh, have no cracks, and they wobble when rolled on a flat surface.

If you feel or think at any time that the egg is not fresh, don't prepare and eat it.

Dancing

I don't know how you feel when you are dancing. I can dance with a partner or just by myself. It gives me the feeling of freedom, no care in the world, being one with the music.

Did you know in the New England Journal of Medicine it was published that dancing can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic have discovered that dancing is aiding

  • stress reduction
  • energy increase
  • muscle tone and coordination increase; and
  • strength improvement.

How do you get started?

When you are listening to music that makes you feel like dancing, grab your partner, child or grandchild and just do it, in the living room, kitchen, down the hallway.

Sign up for a class and actually participate; or take a class that is more challenging, like tango, salsa, zumba or country swing. All of those are just a few of many great options.

Headaches

I am sure most of us have suffered from a headache one time or another. It is considered to be the most common ailment.

Harmless headaches are tension headaches, cluster headaches behind one eye, or the migraine headache. Of course, these don't seem harmless at the time of suffering.

The headaches that we must pay attention to are the following:

  • headache that hits like a bolt and worsens rapidly;

  • headache that spreads down to your neck and is accompanied by fever, rash and disorientation. Call 911.

  • If you wake up every day with a headache, see your doctor and ask for an MRI;

  • A headache that comes and goes for days and includes an elevated body temperature, aching in the temples and visual impairment. Immediate medical attention is required.

  • If a headache increases steadily and affects the entire family, everyone must go outside immediately since it is most likely an indication of carbon monoxide poisoning. Call the fire department.

Sleep

Millions of us are experiencing problems sleeping which has a major impact on our overall well-being!

  • The ideal time of sleep is approximately 7-8 hours for adults.
  • Like our parents did when we were young, we need to have a regular sleep schedule: going to bed and awakening at a regular time;
  • We also need to keep a ritual, like a warm bath or reading a book;
  • It includes keeping our environment cool and dark;
  • Exercise is healthy. But keep in mind that our body needs time to come off the adrenaline high. It is advised not to exercise less than 3 hours before bedtime;
  • We can't overlook the importance of our mattress which has to be replaced every 8-10 years, since we spend 1/3 of our lives on it.
  • And we need to learn relaxation techniques or find ways to reduce our stress.

If you are trying to loose weight, you might find it interesting that sleeping 5.5 hours compared to 8.5 per night, 55% less body fat is lost. That is huge, in my opinion.

Sleep tight tonight!

Happiness

To quote a Chinese Proverb: "If you want happiness for an hour – take a nap. If you want happiness for a day – go fishing. If you want happiness for a month – get married. If you want happiness for a year – inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime - help someone else."

If our brain is positive, we are able to work towards greater happiness which in turn leads us to success not only at work, at school, but also in relationships. Doctors even believe being in a lighter mood and stress-free aids in healing better and quicker.

We also need to choose wisely who our friends are and who we socialize with. We need people around us that make us feel better.

On the other hand, just like that proverb suggests, it sure makes me feel good to do a little deed like offering my spot in the line up at the grocery store to a customer with a restless child, or being involved with charities and volunteer work.

Water

We hear so much about the importance of water and the amount we need to drink. Let's get some facts:

In order to stay hydrated, our body doesn't need water, it needs moisture, 9 cups of it, which includes liquids like beverages, fruit, veggies, soup, tea and coffee.

Being thirsty doesn't mean being dehydrated. It could be an indication that you have a dry mouth or ate salty food. Hydrating food like watermelon, cucumber, tomato, zucchini, eggplant, carrot, peach, roasted chicken breast and baked salmon contain nutrients that enable our body to hold on to the water it needs, and are healthy at the same time.

Of course there are times when our body requires more water than usual, like living in a dry climate, or exercising in hot temperatures, or during an airplane flight. At those times, water or any clear de-caffeinated soft drink or club soda are our best options.

A report from the British Nutrition Foundation also dispels the myth that consumption of water affects the skin appearance.

Tid-Bits

Today you might say "I didn't know that!":

  • Want to lose weight? Pay your groceries with cash. You will spend more money on unhealthy food by paying with a credit card.

  • Did you know that you are able to lower your body temperature by placing an icepack near your groin or under your arm?

  • Did you know that when you cut yourself, by applying black pepper and pressure to the cut the bleeding will stop?

  • Give your kids names that spell out WOW or JOY. According to a study by the University of San Diego, people with favourable initials live up to 4 1/2 yrs longer.

  • Did you know that honey is an effective disinfectant for most common wounds like cuts, etc.

  • Want your cravings for a cigarette to go away? When the craving begins, rub the skin between thumb, index finger and the centre of the palm of your hand.

  • Did you know that by smelling a green apple you won't feel claustrophobic; and if you place a basket of fresh green apples on the table, it may make visitors perceive your home as larger.

Sun Facts

I know I share my love of sunshine with many of you out there. During the past few years we have been educated on the effects the sun rays have on us and our skin, like:

  • One person dies of melanoma every 62 minutes.

  • The sun actually affects our pore size. The longer we stay outside without protection, the more our pores will widen which will make the skin appear rough in texture.

  • The sun irritates the skin that has been affected by eczema or even acne. It may change the skin tone or encourage scarring.

  • UVA rays are the rays that cause wrinkles.

Some tips:

Sunscreen has to be applied daily, 365 days a year. At least an SPF 30 needs to be reapplied throughout the day.

A dermatologist should be seen once a year to detect any abnormalities.

We must also apply sunscreen on our nose, ears, and top of our feet; and keep the sun block ready at all times: in our purse, car, office, or wherever life may take you.

If we heed recommendations by professionals we are still able to have fun in the sun without a bad conscience.
